Day 1 of 3
Calm conditions met the sailors this morning for day 1 of the ARYA DF65 Australian Championship. Unfortunately, the course set and used for yesterday's practice sailing could not be used in the conditions, and we moved to the less used course B area. With the first race being a little far away with the floating pontoon in place, we decided to extend the control area to the gangway to the floating pontoon, and completed another four races before lunch time came. After an enjoyable lunch and chat amongst competitors, we resumed racing, however, with the wind shifting further, we needed to re-sett he course again, further along the sea wall in the course B area. Another three races were held in this area, until the wind direction intervened again, and we moved for the last time for the day to the course C area, where the larger yachts normally race. Finishing promptly at 5, we got twelve races in for the day. We were expecting maybe 8 more, but happy to take what we could with the tricky wind conditions. Two sailors sailed above the rest of the fleet for much of the day today. Phil Burgess (RSYS) and Lisa Blackwood (RBRYC) showed the rest of the field how to sail the light, but sometimes wavy conditions. Phil in front at the end of the day on 20 points, with Lisa 2 further back on 22 points. John Wyatt (SMMC) comfortably in third place, on 36 points, with Phil jackman (RBRYC) currently in 4th on 43 points. Sailing starts again tomorrow at 1030.

From reports to me today, the breeze at MBYC was as close to perfect as possible. A mid strength B rig all day, with great consistency from the South East.
Reminder that we will be sailing at Montrose on Wednesday, with the distinct possibility of some interstate visitors also having a sail in preparation for the DF Nationals, starting this Thursday. There was rain, sun and light wind from around the compass at Risdon Brook Dam today. The first two races were held in a very light South Easter then after early lunch the wind was marginally fresher and from the North East.
Thanks to today’s PRO Ian Hey who did well with courses and race management under the tricky conditions. Congratulations to our winner today John Murrell who not only won two races but was very consistent throughout the day. I am not 100% sure of this but I think that this is John’s first race series win - so very well done, and well deserved too John. Second and just one point behind was the hard-to-stop Rod Jackman and third was Peter Germain who also claimed two race wins today. Congratulations to all. Next Wednesdays sailing will be at Montrose and will be for both DF65’s and DF95’s. Although it will be casual warm-up invitation races for the championships, Wednesday’s racing is open to all, even if you are not participating in the champs. Racing will start about 1:00 but come earlier to assist with setting up. Next Sunday’s sailing will be IOM scratch racing 1:00 at Montrose. John S |
