A small fleet of 6 today, but all enthusiastic I am sure.
Welcome to Matt Bugg, who sailed with us today. Matt had joined with us some years ago and returned since to 2.4m sailing, winning national titles in the class. We are fortunate to have him sailing with us, and I do hope that he likes the DF95's and decides to join with us soon. Twelve races completed today, with two groups develping very close compettion within each other. Battle for the round win was close between Ray and Stu, with Stu coming out as deserved round winner - not finishing below a second place all day. Fantastic, consistent sailing. Stu winning with just 14 points. Just four behind, was Ray, with 18 points. Another very consistent day, with throwouts of only 5 and 3 for the day. The battle for third was very tight, with two points separating 3rd and 5th, Rod Jackman took the third spot, with 36 points. In Silver Fleet, albeit a bit light on with numbers this week - John Short came away with the win on the day with 15 points, just one point ahead of John Hall, on 16. Coming Up Stay ChatTY Regatta is on this coming Wednesday. Briefing at 1030 for button press at 1100, with last race starting by 2.15. Entry for the day is by donation - proceeds will be going to Stay ChatTY. RBRYC will be providing a BBQ lunch to competitors. We have prizes for 1st Overall, 1st Woodie/Classic and 1st Silver Fleet/Guest. Please get along if you can to help support a very worthy cause. Next weekend is the rescheduled RM State Championship at Montrose. Unfortunately, we only have four entries at the moment. If you are considering entering, please enter on the website as soon as possible. If we do not have enough (6) entries by Thursday night, we may have to cancel the championship for this year and will in its place on Sunday, run a RM Scratch day instead. Kyle

We don’t get a lot of South Easterly making its way to the Dam and so I was interested to find out what this forecast might bring. Great sailing conditions for IOM’s - that is what it brought! Light and with a bit of West in it at first but it steadily built to about 15 knots throughout the day, and it was perhaps reinforced by sea-breeze effect in the afternoon. All skippers chose their A rigs for the first race and most kept them for the day even though the boats were a handful downwind at times.
There was no consistent ‘right’ way to work your way around the course today and I think that good policy was to simply go on every shift and knock as it was presented to you. Special honorable mention goes to new member Henry Finnis who is leasing the club Mojo. Henry’s was right up there in most of the races and his scorecard featured a race win and a third place. As for the bloke who was setting the courses (without mentioning any names) it was a pity that he couldn’t remember them as it cost him badly in two or three races! Second and third place today were tied on points between Ian Hey and Ray Joyce with Bodge getting the nod on count-back. Jammy Jones won the day again a couple of points ahead. Jammy is enjoying a real return to form and has secured a overall podium finish in each of the last four Wednesday’s that he has sailed. Congratulations Jammy, Ian and Ray. Coming up: Sunday: DF95 Scratch racing at Risdon Brook Dam. Next Wednesday: A special event - The Speak up! Stay ChatTY regatta! Details below: Risdon Brook Radio Yacht Club invites you to The SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY Regatta For IOM Yachts on Wednesday 27th November A bit of a quicker day today, with inclement weather shortening the day and sailors happy to finish 90 minutes early.
We unfortunately lost a few sailors overnight, through some soreness and and electrical failure - and Les was too unwell to make it to help out with the officiating duties - hopr you get better soon Les. The forecast 30 knot plus winds weren't there on arrival, and the river had flattened out to a 4-6 knot breeze. We got in three races before lunch was called, having changed to a B rig in the race before lunch. After lunch, we were again on A Rigs, but after a few races post lunch, a massive squall came in with torrential rain and the predicted winds - which is when the day was called off a bit early. Michael Hickman maintained his overnight advantage, however Richard and Stuart cut in to that gap, but was not quite enough time to mount a serious challenge. As such, Mike was the well deserved winner of the 2024 IOM State Championship, finishing on 21 points. Stuart Dawes continued his form from yesterday, placing second on 28 points. Richard Fisher rounded out the top three with 30 points. In Silver Fleet, Ricky Price continued his fine form, winning on 21 points. Ian Hey took second place on 23 points. Peter Sylvester rounded out the top 3 with 31 points. Big thanks to our volunteers over the two days. Les Hanson, John Hall, Phil Jackman and Phil Turnbull all gave their time to officiate while the rest of us could sail. The way they all went about it was very commendable. Thanks a lot guys. The quality of sailing over the two days was also of very high standard. We all make mistakes and miscalculate on the water, and to see the penalty turns taken straight away and without having to be called on those obvious ones was fantastic to see. There are always the ones that are a bit unclear, but they were solved quite quickly and amicably - great to see. Finally, we'd also like to thank our northern sailors for cming this weekend. Thanks Ted and Dicko for taking the time to come down and sail with us. Your friendly banter and company is always a highlight and we hope to see you both returning again soon. Upcoming sailing This Wednesday, we have IOM Mid Week Handicap at the dam, starting at 11am. Next Sunday is DF95 Scratch, also at the dam, at 1pm Coming soon is a Wooden IOM and Classic IOM Day at Trevallyn Dam on Saturday, 7th December. I believe it is a 1030 start and my understanding is that the format of the day will be two races of IOM Woodies, then swap around to two races of IOM Classics and so on. Throw it in your calendar - more details to come. Kyle Phil Turnbull Well, what can you say. The 17 knot winds that were predicted all day didn't come in until about 2.30 today.
We got 3 races in prior to lunch and had a very long break, waiting for the wind to come in. Welcome back to Les, who has just returned from Qld and straight back into Pro work for us. Les was ably assisted by John Hall (terrific work with setting courses today John), Phil Turnbull and Phil Jackman. Great to see sme other club members coming along to watch as well. With the wind coming up at the end of the day, we got some great heavier weather sailing in, with one skipper going to his C Rig for the last race. Michael Hickman is the runaway leader at this stage, sitting comfortably in first place on just 11 points. There is a two way tie for 2nd and 3rd, with Richard Fisher and Stuart Dawes both on 20 points - and another two way tie for 4th and 5th with Chris Wood and Ray Joyce battling that one out. In Silver Fleet, we have Ricky Price currently in first place on 9 points, and a 3 way tie for second, with Rod Marshall, Ian Hey and Ted Stevens all on 14 points. Sailing resumes tomorrow for the conclusion of the Championship. Kyle Overall it was a very enjoyable day with plenty of banter and humour 👍😂
15 skippers fronted up to little or no breeze, 0-1 knot from N - NW It was warm then became wet upto midday before the breeze completely vanished. We managed 4 small course races before lunch hoping that a breeze may appear. After lunch it swung around from the SW -SE (very shifty) & we managed Longer courses for the afternoon session Unfortunately weed was an issue for a few skippers. Henry Finnis sailed #67 (RBRYC Loan boat) to a race win R6, thank you to the skippers that helped tune the boat for Henry. We also welcomed Dicko #70 from up north with his AKA, who started off with a second in R1, and line honours R3. Congrats to Ricky Price, who won the day today on 21 points, closely followed by Ray Joyce, just one point behind on 22, and Phil Jackman in third on 27 points. Cheers Bodge COMING UP: Saturday and Sunday - Tasmanian IOM State Championship at Montrose. Button press both days 1030 - remember, you boat will be weighed prior to hitting the water and can all payments either be made electronically prior to Saturday, or cash payments prior to briefing. Please don't wait t be asked for payment, but chase Les down to give it to him, which will save quite an amount of time. We do ahve a few observers for the weekend, but if you could spare a little bit of time on either day, please feel free to come down to watch and/or act as observer for us. Next Wednesday IOM handicap racing at Risdon Brook Dam 11:00 button. Shorty There was a forecasted maximum of 29 degrees and even when we arrived at Risdon Brook Dam for today’s DF95 handicap racing it was noticeably warm. The wind early in the day was fairly light – perhaps about 5 knots for the first race but it built race by race
Lisa was right on top of what was happening with the wind and was the only one to change down to a B-rig for race #5. By the end of the race we were all nose-diving and unable to control our boats with the rudders out of the water. All while Lisa sailed off to a run away victory. It was good to see Rod Jackman back on the water again with the DF95. And straight back into good form too with a win and a second place in the short series tally. That win was useful too as there was a three way tie for 5th to 7th places and the race win gave Rod the nod on count-back. While we were having lunch some huge gusts of perhaps 25 – 30 knots came through and PRO Andrew Wardrop had the wisdom to call an early end to the day’s sailing. With just 5 races completed there was only one discard allowed in the tally. Third place today went to the consistent Wayne Behrens. Second went to (the Sheep) David Woolley who has also been regularly featuring on the dais at Puddleduck Vineyard. Ian Hey took the day also with consistently good finishes. Congratulations Bodge, Sheep and Buzzy. Coming up: Saturday: We have been invited to an IOM Woodies regatta at Forcet Lakes (10:30 button-press) Sunday: IOM scratch racing at Montrose (1:00 button press) - PRO needed for the day. Please contact Ray or Kyle if you are interested in helping out. Next Wednesday: IOM handicap racing at Risdon Brook Dam (11:00 button press) I think that we should get a good turn-out to these events as skippers will be wanting to get practice in before the State IOM titles which will be held the following weekend (16th and 17th November). Entries for the State titles can be made on-line. Shorty A small, but keen fleet of 6 turned up today for the re-run of the John Emms Memorial Regatta.
We relocated from Montrose with the very windy conditions and the expectation that Risdon Brook would offer a safer venue to sail. That said, the anemometer that Ricky brought along showed 55.8km/hr wind speed as we started the first race. Not surprising that we were all starting in C3 rigs. The day consisted of C3's initially, which turned to a bit of a lull for a while, where most changed out to C1, and then the last stanza of the day was kitted out across the fleet in C2 rigs. Stu jumped out of the blocks early, running off a first and a few seconds early on in what ended up a close competiton between Stu, Ray and Kyle for much of the day. Unfortunately, John Hall had some issues with his rudder and was unable to continue sailing after race 4. At lunch time, it was reported that the top three positions were within 4 points of each other, such was the closeness of the sailing. After lunch though, Kyle found a fine vein of form, enjoying the very windy conditions and locating shifts effectively - putting a gap on the rest of the field, winning the regatta on 22 points. Second place was Stu Dawes, 7 points in arrears on 29 points, Ray Joyce took out third, just one behind Stu on 30 points. Although it might have been a bit of a gap to the other sailors, Rod sailed very well, with a number of 2nd and 3rds during the day, and Cookie also sailed quite well, with four race wins during the day. No sail day can be complete without its volunteers, and a big thankyou to John Short for doing the PRO work today and Ricky Price for his assistance with both the rescue boat duties and helping John with the starts and finishes. It was fantastic also to see a number of club members come along to watch the racing today. It was fantastic feeling the support from you all. Coming up Wednesday is Mid Week DF95Handicap at the Dam, button press at 11am Next Sunday is IOM Scratch, at MBYC, button press at 1pm Kyle |
