What a lovely day at the dam today. Albeit with a bit of variable light and shifty wind, but enjoyed overally by everyone.
Like it or not, I think we all got some real benefits from the breeze at times, and also got hammered by it as well, with the constant oscillations and changes in speed. An excellent fleet of 11 yachts made it for the start of the DF65 segment of the day, expertly PRO'd by Ray. 8 races completed by the time 1230 came around and a real close one for the top three spots. Some excellent sailing further down as well with a real rivalry going on with the DSS side of the fleet. Overall, the winner of the day was Stu Dawes with an impressive 13 points from the 8 races. Second place was Kyle Stewart, just one point behind on 14 points. Third place was Lisa Blackwood, just two further back on 16 points. Where it really matters, in Silver Fleet, we had a lot of very close races. Both Scott Brain and John Penman taking overall race wins. John won the Silver Fleet on 12 points, with Scott two further afield on 14, and Phil Mackey in third - just one further back - on 15 points. After the short break, we had the DF95 fleet on the water with Rod Marshall taking over the PRO duties. Just the 7 races for this one, with a softer breeze for the rest of the day. A fantastic fleet of 16 for the DF95's but I had to pull out before hitting the water. Someone who is normally quite on th eball with maintenance issues initially had a siezed bearing on the mast but got it sorted soon enough and then found the rudder servo had also siezed completely. A reminder to all about checking boats for race readiness the day prior at least to make sure everything is right to go. Watching the sailing was really enjoyable though, and seeing so many yachts approcah the windward mark in close proximity, and with so few incidents in rounding was great to see. Any incidents promptly made right with the required penalty turn without fuss. Absolutely fantastic sialing to all on the water. Today, a top 3 sailors quickly established themselves with Lisa, Stuart and Nick all vying for the podium spots. At the end of the day though, Stu took the double with a win in the 95's as well, with just 12 points from the 7 races. Lisa was second place, just two behind on 14 points. Nick rounded out the top three, a further 5 behind on 19 points. Then we had our fleet of 10 Silver Fleet skippers, again with some very close results. John Penman took first spot for a Silver Fleet double for the day with 18 points. Just one behind was visitor from the DSS, Phil Mackey on 19 points. John Hall took out third spot on 23 points. John Hall, Scott Brain and Matt Bugg were only a few points behind though, ready to pounce on any mistakes to those in front. A really enjoyable days sailing, although the wind had a lot of tricks up its sleeve on us, which kept everyone on their toes. A welcome to DF sialing to Grant Wise - normally taking photos for us, but recently joined the club and enjoyed his first sail. It will take a while, but before log, you will be getting some consistency there and will take the sailing to another level. Thanks also to both our DSS/RBRYC members for coming along to support todays sailing, as well as our visitors fromt he DSS, Stewart Gordon and Phil Mackey. It looks like you both really enjoyed the day and hopefully you will look to join us soon, giving the benefit of more sail days and ability to compete in the upcoming National Champs if you wish at MBYC in April next year.
