Ask skippers around the paddock today for a rig selection...... #A #A #B #A #B #B Annoyingly the breeze was almost always between rigs, those selecting an A rig were frequently carrying too much and struggled off the wind and those electing B were generally under canvassed to windward but had a roaring downwind - as the long distance showed. The regular handicap race series has been modified to be run over 4 weeks with handicaps carrying over each week. Here are the results for today 1st - Stu Dawes on 13 points leading a pack on 17 points Ray Joyce - Wayne Behrens - Stu Harris. See you next week for round 2. A Displays of sailing that would make a submariner feel at home where on display today. Wind from the north came in and tested top of B rig conditions and then C rig was called for at the luncheon adjournment. Of note was the boat handling skills of Ray Joyce in his downwind sailing ability. Rarely was Ray's Britpop not in perfect control. The race series was again quite competitive even with the conditions. David Jones went to some lengths to get new eyes just so he could win the 1st prize beer by one point from Stu Dawes and a further point to Rod Jackman. Hopefully next week will return to more moderate conditions. Hang on folks - its blowing Well the forecasters where correct with their proposed "windy conditions" When we arrived at the dam today it was B rig conditions which at times should have been C rigs, and wasn't it fun. Breeze from the NW with some very big gusts. I didnt count the number of boats but I think at least 14. A number dropped out due to breakdowns. Thanks to Stuart Harris for running the handicap series the results of which I don't have but perhaps Stuart can advise. Dennis Lees launched his immaculately built V9 & then sensibly took it off the water due to the conditions. Congratulations to Peter Sylvester on taking the beer. See you next week..... The weather & sailing conditions were so good today I have put it in a bottle to be bought out when needed in the future. Started out with a soft & patchy breeze fluctuating between south & north but about 11 am the sea breeze arrived giving the 14 skippers some excellent sailing. The handicap series started with a long distance race with the back marker part of the fleet on a 2 minute penalty - the race was won by Kim Potter in fine style who of course suffered a time penalty for the next series of short races held after lunch. The fleet was again divided into 2 with the back markers carrying a 1 minute penalty. After 5 races Rob Cooney was declared a worthy winner with Tony edging out the Commodore for second. Next Tuesday a few of us are by general invitation venturing down to Franklin (10 am ) to sail with the three I0M's in the Franklin fleet . Last Tuesday of every month the Franklin members have an open day for all classes so I thought it would be a good idea for us to support & promote I0M sailing at another club so if you would like to join us please come down & show your support & enjoy some Franklin hospitality. Summer..... Today it arrived and was enjoyed by the dozen or so that enjoyed some very competitive racing. Good to see Peter Sylvester getting to grips with his new Cheinz and John Banks not breaking anything. The race series today was conducted by Dave Murfett and after series of round the triangles and long distance saw Peter Germain win the beer from Peter Sylvester and Dave Jones third. See you next week. A great day on the water with just shy of a dozen boats greeting the starter. Wonderful to see some new faces showing interest in the boats with a couple of boats having recently changed hands as the fleet continues to expand. The handicap series was ably run by Stew Harris with a good combination of triangle and long distance courses making it an interesting tactical sail for all. The series was won today by David Jones (Britpop) by a single point over Ray Joyce (Britpop) with Anthony Castray (Trojan 2) a close third. Sadly John Banks' day ended before it began with a broken side stay and Wayne Behrens burning a rudder servo before hitting the water. Have a good week.... |
