Todays sailing at Risdon Brook Park was all action, the Risdon Brook Radio Yacht Club’s Reptile Recovery and Relocation Group was at its public spirited and nature conservation best.
Unfortunately I was not in attendance to witness this most delicate operation, but I have learnt from those who were of the enormity of the feat. It appears that a Copper head of about that size (reports were very varied) managed to get stranded in the hard water drain, several attempts to form an escape ramp were ignored by the troubled snake, finally the boat recovery pole was used to scoop the snake onto the bank, I was told that if the pole had been any shorter the snake would still be in trouble. A very successful operation, eat your heart out “Snake Rescue.” With action of this importance taking place the sailing results, of the day, fade into insignificance, but for those of you who are purist radio sailors, and wish to keep in touch with the Club’s sailing activities I have attached the results of todays Marblehead, Summer Series, Round 3. From what I have been told it was another day when the wind came mainly from a roughly southerly direction at very varying strengths. (Not very important when a snake has been saved). Stuart Dawes was the pick of the bunch, winning the day on twelve points, John Hall is coming to grips with the new boat, finishing second on nineteen points, and Peter Sylvester was third on twenty-eight points. Next Sunday, 25th January, is Round 2 of the IOM Handicap. However prior to the racing a Working Bee is to be held, commencing at 10.00am, it is proposed to; Inspect, repair, or replace all of the course markers Launching area upgrading and maintenance Launching ramp #2, redecking , and other maintenance. The property officer has advised that all tools required will be supplied, he only requires operators. I have been reliably advised that the culinary skills of John Banks will once again be on display, and for the enjoyment of all the workers.

Todays event at the Risdon Brook Dam was conducted in ideal conditions, summer finally arrived and what appeared to be a sea breese was in attendance all afternoon, the "A" rig being the rig of choise. The guest Race Officer set a short winward and return course which was used all day. Twelve IOM'S and two Marbleheads lined up for the first Race a graded scratch race, the IOM's being divided into two Handicap groups, and the Marbleheads a little further back. All races were keenly contested, eleven skippers winning races, and sailed in excellent spirits, as the RO it was a pleasure to be part of the day, really makes it all worth while. David Jones and Stuart Harris sailed consistantly all afternoon, Dennis finally beating Stuart on a count back with sixty- two points to win the day, new commer Kyle Stewart sailing "old faithful" and showed he will be a contender when his boat arrives finishing third on sixty-four points, with Rod Jackman on seventy-two points fourth. |
