It seems our handicap system is working ok at present judging from today’s results. Phillip Turnbull sailing his newly purchased IOM from Les Hanson won the day on 10 points. First time out sailing an IOM so well done Phillip. Second was Ray Joyce with 8 points. Third on 7 points Dennis Lees, Ted Laing, John Smith, Don Mac Loud and John Banks Next Stuart Harris 6 points then Wayne Turner and Andrew Wardrop on4 points. Long Distance Racing next Sunday We hope to see more members out sailing next week. Regards JOHN A nice cool morning greeted those that attended sailing at the dam. The first race of the winter series was light and fluky as was race 2. The breeze settled 3,4, and 5 but light in patches. The final race was like the first and a shortened course was necessary. Every sailor was in on the points today with Stuart Harris and Andrew Wardrop with 9 points each with Andrew winning on a count back. John Smith, Wayne Turner and John Banks each with 8 points Ray Joyce 7 points Dennis Lees 6 points and Wayne Behrens on 5 points. After 3 rounds of the winter series Stuart Harris and John Banks are the leaders with 22 points, next is `Wayne Turner with 19, next is Andrew Wardrop and Ray Joyce with 14 points, next is Wayne Behrens and Lisa Blackwood with 13 points, next is Dennis lees and John Smith with 12 points. We had only 9 sailors willing to venture out today and unfortunately for Ted Laing damaged prior to the first race had to call it quits for the day. Hope to see you back next week Ted along with a few more members out sailing. Thanks to our Commodore Dave Murfit for the PRO Job today. Sorry no photos today. Just a reminder IOM at Montrose on Sunday, 10.30 start John Banks I am beginning to sound like a broken record but it was another great days sailing at the dam today. When I got there it was very chilly with a strong northerley. The comment was made that due to the conditions we would be lucky to get many starters but in the end 14 robust Taswegians including a couple of Kiwi refugees fronted the start gun for a morning of excellent racing. At the end of the day a Kiwi gentleman was triumpant winning the wine which just goes to prove that there is no nationality bias under our handicap system. So congratulations to Tony & Ted Laing in second & Wayne Turner third. In the photos below you will see a recent absentee has made a welcome return to Wednesdays. I cant quite recall his name but he sails a Britpop extremely well. Just a reminder that membership fees are now overdue ($60) Next Sunday is IOM Scratch at the dam starting at 10.00 am Andrew Another good morning of racing at Montrose this morning which attracted 10 cold skippers who fronted the starter in a steady NNW A rig breeze. The usual format of scratch & handicap races with 10 races completed.
Some very good performances I thought with a special mention to Geoff Mathews & Richard Barwick & Phil Turnbull who were sailing particularly well also Cliff who half way through the event was in the lead but a couple of poor races dragged his fleet position down. As much as the handicapper tried otherwise Lisa Blackwood easily won the day on 24 points from David Jones on 32 points, Cliff Eaves on 34 points & Richard & Phil equal 4th on 42 points. Col Johnson had a good 5th on 51 points. The standard of the fleet is definately improving as skippers attain better boat handling skills - we just need to see a few less collisions & rule infringements & the whole DF95 experience will be rewarding for everyone. Sorry no photos, I did remember my camera but forgot to use it. Tuesday week is DF95's at Cygnet at 10 am & as usual Tank has guaranteed the weather. Andrew Excellent sailing at the dam today with solid A rig breeze from the north flicking at times to the NE. A good fleet of IOM's with a couple of DF95's. Richard Barwick was sailing Kyle's Panko & got quicker & quicker as the morning went on & seemed to enjoy the IOM, probably best not to give it back Richard. Don Maccleod was also sailing well with his new sails & a bit more consistency would have seen a top result. At the end of the racing the day was won by Stuart Harris on a countback to Lisa. In recent weeks the backmarkers have dominated the racing so John Banks will be revising the handicap system to try & even out the results. Tomorrow is DF95 at Montrose at 10.am. A few more new DF95's are are on order so the fleet is still growing. Photos below |
