Mid Week Handicap

Dennis Lees launched his new V10,‘Beau Gust’ today. She was beautifully prepared and looking ‘the money including gst’.  However, one tiny knot gave way unfortunately, his running sheets line on the winch.

Also we would like to welcome a new member, James Andrewarthur AUS 150. Andrew has recently retired from business and moved to the Eastern Shore.
Andrew is no slouch at the helm and is the son of one of our club’s well remembered skippers, Tom.

(Team) Geoff Mathews won the day today with excellent consistent sailing. The mentoring assistance Geoff has had is reaping the rewards now.  Congratulations Geoff

Long Distance Series Round 2

27/5/2018

Securing a win for the day with drops of 7 and 8 in a fleet of 14 in a handicap event by Andrew Wardrop has shown what consistency can do for you. A nice birthday present for you. Well sailed. Ray Joyce had his Britpop running very well as well, chasing hot on Andrews heels, just three points behind, with yours truly and John Hall just one point further back.
A really enjoyable day at the dam, with a light breeze throughout most of the event.
There was a BBQ provided and an informal general meeting, which will be repeated during the Long Distance events. Some good communication both ways in regards to the roster, the upcoming brainstorming session, with some discussion points to be brought to the committee for further discussion. The main point being the no-sail day on the brainstorming session – 17th June, and the general sentiment against not sailing on the day. We will email the resolution of this as soon as possible for all members to hear.
Thanks to the helpers who turned up early today for setup, as well as those who hung around for a few extra minutes to pack everything away and lock up. Also, thanks to Wayne Behrens and Rod Jackman, who helped Geoff set up his Panko from it’s somewhat dodgy tuning at the start of the day (sorry Geoff). Not sure Geoff was too happy once he sailed a few races after the “Behrens tune”, with the handicapping hurting after a 3rd and 1st after the tune up. With the experienced guys so willing to help others out, it will surely keep the newer sailors at the club enjoying their sailing.

As per the constitution, memberships are due by 5th June, so please get your subs in as soon as possible. As a reminder, they are unchanged this year, still at $60.

The day was raced in the same format as our friends in Swansea, with 1st gaining 5pts, 2nd with 4 pts, 3rd 3 pts and 4th 2 pts.
Interestingly, Peter Sylvester (Welcome back to the water) won both on "Swansea Pts" and if scored as per HMS, but the rest were much closer on "Swansea Pts" which shows how much fun it can be with the closer results.
It also shows how well the handicapper structured the start times as well.

RM Southern Tasmanian Championship

Congratulations to John Cole-Cook in taking out this years Southern Tasmanian Championship on 15 points, 7 ahead of Lisa Blackwood (22) and Ray Joyce, third on 25 points.
I was not at the dam for long today, but noticed the cordial approach all skippers took while racing. Fantastic club representation.
Thanks also to John Gard, who again was PRO for the event, in quite cool to cold and at times quite wet conditions. Hopefully, some video will come later on.

IOM Handicap Perpetual Trophy Round 3

16/5/2018

For the first time in 4 months the mid week fleet returned to Risdon Dam after an increase in the dam water level. A bit of weed clearing by Ray soon had the launching area clear & weed did not mar the days sailing. Temperature was about 5 degrees when the fleet of eight started but a steady A rig nor-west breeze produced some excellent scratch racing prior to the handicap series. Ted Laing was an early retirement with electrical problems & later Geoff Mathews suffered winch problems - more work for Kyle.
At the end of 7 races the day was won by Wayne Behrens with Andrew Wardrop second, closely followed by David Jones in third.
All in all some enjoyable sailing
