Another fine and warm, late summer's day with clear skies and a forecast early sea breeze by noon. Thirteen skippers fronted for today's Long Distance racing, 10 IOM 's and 3 Marbleheads. John Banks, while recovering from a calf tear and didn't sail, did a fine job as PRO and chef for the day. Members reported the sea breeze already in the lower reaches of the Derwent around South Arm on their way to the Brooke and by the first race at 11:00 AM was starting to waft onto the race course with the usual funkiness that you have to expect from a land locked basin of water, at least at the southern end of the dam. Handicaps were administered for the IOM's with no surprises and the Marbleheads off 3 minutes; the series being divided into separate classes for the first time. By the afternoon, the breeze had consolidated to around 8 knots, and while still very funky around the start/finish line in the lee of Caretaker's Hill, was quite a nice breeze for the long beat back from the bay mark. Peter Germein took line honours in Race 1 for the IOM's with David Murfet second and Andrew Wardrop third. I took the gun for the M's with John Hall second and Ray Joyce third. Race 2 went to Rod Jackman followed by David Jones and Andrew Wardrop. John Hall scored a win with Ray second and yours truly third in the Marbleheads. Race 3 and Peter Ameron's new Byerley design Maxim was first of the IOM's to finish with Stuart Harris second and Peter Germein third. The Marbleheads finished in the same order as Race 2. Les Hanson was sailing well off scratch and found the right way home to win Race 4 from Peter Germein on the podium again as too Rod Jackman. The F3 took the gun for the M's with Ray second and John third. Race 5 saw another win for Peter Germein with Les again on the podium and Kyle Stewart taking out third place. Another win for yours truly with John Hall second and Ray Joyce third. Race 6 and Stuart Harris got the nod from the judges with Peter Ameron finishing second and another well sailed third for Les Hanson. A hat trick for #48 with Ray second and John DNF'ing with loss of steerage. Les Hanson continued his good form to win Race 7 with Rod Jackman taking out second place from Stuart Harris. John overcame his loss in the previous race to take the gun from Ray and myself third in the Marblehead division. Race 8 and Kyle Stewart knocked up a win from Andrew Wardrop in second place and Peter Ameron third. I took the gun for the M's with Ray second and John third. The final Race 8 and Kyle score a double with the Silver Fox having his best result for the day followed by Andrew Wardrop to round out the podium. I also scored a double in the last race with John Hall second and Ray third. Final results for the IOM's and a well sailed Cobber gave Les Hanson a comfortable 3 point win on 19 points, followed by Peter Germein on 22 points and Kyle Stewart third with 25 points. I took the win for the day in the Marbleheads with 9 points, John Hall second with 12 points and Ray third with 15 points. Next Sunday is Marblehead Summer Series Round 5 with racing from 1:30 PM. Till then, wet sails. Stuart Dawes.
