Wednesday Handicap Series 9/9/2015

Another fine spring day for sailing today with a moderate to fresh nor-wester with a bit of west as well, the usual stuff from the Brook. Eleven skippers fronted and last weeks winner Wayne Behrens had the pleasure of PRO duties. Bruce Rose off 20 seconds won Race 1 from The Commodore David Murfett and John Banks in third. Race 2 winner was Stu Harris from JB and Kim Potter in third place, Rob Cooney won Race 3 beating home the Commodore and Peter Darcy. After 3 races Dave Murfett was leading the pack on 13 points with five skippers tied for second, three points adrift. For a fleet of eleven boats, the point spread was only eleven points from first to last.
Ray Joyce stepped up to the podium in Race 4, joined by Stu Harris again and Andrew Wardrop in third place. Race 5 was after lunch and the conditions favoured a long distance race. This gave the v9's a chance to stretch their legs with yours truly off 1 minute winning comfortably from Darcy off 1:15 and Ray Joyce off 1:30 not far behind him.

Going into the last race, Ray Joyce had it in the bag with a 3 point lead from both Andrew Wardrop and John Banks tied for second on 17 points, and the 2 V9's both tied a further 2 points adrift. Bruce Rose sailed well again and was the only skipper to win two races by winning Race 6 with Kim Potter crossing the line in second place and the Commodore in third. Andrew Wardrop sailed well again to add four to his score but Ray Joyce had a shocker (or was it tactics?) with a tenth place.

SO...
Sorry Andrew, if you had come third in the last race I would have said cheers but after applying the discard (big doh from Wayne), Ray Joyce won the day but only just and on count back with his solitary win from Andrew Wardrop. Kim Potter's final race score jumped him into third position overall for the day.

Just goes to show that you don't have to win all the races to win the day. Sail well and consistent mid fleet, grab a win or two and you'll be grinning. Looking at the scores only 5 points separated first and ninth. I think you will agree that the racing is close and the handicaps and system are working well, we just need to fine tune the scoring side of things which we are in the process of doing.

Sunday is IOM racing with Round 6 of the Winter Series. Handicap racing starts at 10:30 AM and scratch at 1:00 PM. Till then, wet sails,

Stuart Dawes
